Awesome things happen when faculty within our various departments collaborate! Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation Administration, Dr. Michael Mahoney, and Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Dr. John McMillen, are featured in the latest issue of Journal of Facility Planning, Design, and Management for their article entitled “Facility Planning, Design, and Management of Mobility Assistance Programs: Review and Recommendations of Accessible Routes from Super Bowl XLV.”

The article encompasses a case study and legal research analysis of Super Bowl XLV’s Mobility Assist program. This study expands venue Mobility Assist research and develops recommended policies and procedures to accommodate people with special needs or mobility limitations. The paper is based on the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Americans With Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), which require at least one continuous, unobstructed route be provided to and from public facilities.
Findings from their study indicate Super Bowl XLV’s Mobility Assist program met the ADA and ADAAG requirements. Super Bowl XLV’s Mobility Assist program demonstrates how other public venues and events may manage access to public entertainment, recreation, and leisure events.
“The expertise of Dr. Mahoney and Dr. McMillen in accessibility and creating environments where people of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate, are truly valued and model Fresno State’s commitment to diversity and inclusion,” said Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau, Interim Dean of the College of Health and Human Services.
